The CONVENTION (CONtaminated VENtral hernia risk stratificaTION) tool has been developed in collaboration between St. Mark's Hospital, London and The Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam, with funding kindly provided by the British Hernia Society.

This tool has been devloped and validated for use in pre-operative risk stratification for patients with Ventral Hernia Working Group grade 3 or 4† or modified Ventral Hernia Working Group grade 3‡ midline ventral hernias.

The risk of the following short- and long-term post-operative outcomes can be calculated from the factors requested in the form: Clavien Dindo grade of 3 or more; wound intervention required (defined as need for interventional radiology or surgical intervention post-repair) and intra abdominal septic complication (defined as need for interventional radiology or surgical intervention for intra-abdominal collection or anastomotic leak post-repair). Long-term outcome is the need for further hernia surgery.
